Getting around Monterrey is relatively simple as various transport options are in place. Many tourists travel into Monterrey via the nearby, General Mariano Escobedo International Airport. Serving upwards of five million travellers each year, the General Mariano Escobedo Airport handles many flights for the city, earning it the alternative name of Monterrey Airport.
Bus transport is readily available around Monterrey and in particular, long-distance buses are a good way to travel outside of the city and reach other parts of Mexico. However, metro trains are amongst the best public transport in Monterrey and this subway network is extremely popular.

Located some 15 km / 9 miles to the north-east of Monterrey city, General Mariano Escobedo Airport lies off the Highway 54, which travels towards Ciudad Aleman. No public transport serves Monterrey's airport as such, although Pescaria buses do travel nearby and the word 'airport' is always clearly indicated at the front.
However, taxi transport is equally popular and not overly expensive. Airlines regularly travel into Monterrey Airport from a number of prominent destinations around both the USA and Mexico, while the smaller Del Norte Airport (NTR) is also nearby and used by an increasing number of Mexican budget airlines.

Rental cars in Monterrey tend to be a little pricey, although extremely convenient should you choose to travel outside of the city proper. A number of spacious parking lots are located beneath the Gran Plaza and also on the eastern side of the bus station, next to the Avenida Colón.

Monterrey Travel and Transport: Travel by Bus and Coach - Monterrey, Mexico, MX
Frequent bus transport travels almost everywhere in the city and is extremely popular with Monterrey locals. Useful bus routes include:
- Monterrey Bus Transport: Bus station to central Monterrey - travels from the corner of Reforma and Amado Nervo, into the Zona Rosa
- Monterrey Bus Transport: Central Monterrey to bus station - (blue) stops at Juárez at Padre Mier and travels to the Avenida Colón
- Monterrey Bus Transport: Central Monterrey to Museo del Obispado - (red and black) travels to the west, along the Padre Mier and past the Degollado
- Monterrey Bus Transport: Central Monterrey to San Pedro - (orange) travels from the corner of the Hidalgo and Juárez, towards the Colonia del Valle and the Avenida Vasconcelos
- Monterrey Bus Transport: Central Monterrey to the Instituto Tecnológico - travels from the corner of the Pino Suárez and the Hidalgo

The metro transport network in Monterrey offers a sensible and simple way to travel around the city and municipality, comprising two lines. Line 1 is elevated and travels in an east-west direction on the northern side of Monterrey, offering good views along the way and heading to the surrounding suburban areas. Line 2 travels in a north-south direction and passes through the Padre Mier (Zona Rosa) and also the Zaragoza (Gran Plaza). Metro transport in Monterrey operates between 05:00 and midnight each day.

Taxis are amongst the easiest and most popular mode of transport in Monterrey and the Green Cabs are often referred to as the city's 'eco taxis', being easy to identify by their white and green rooftops. Taxis waiting in the ranks next to Monterrey Airport and bus station can be more expensive and fares should always be agreed before you start to travel. Don't be afraid to haggle or simply say 'no' and move on to another taxi.
